How to show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
By the Seamwire team · Updated
THE SHORT ANSWER
Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and no special markup or AI text file is needed. Beyond that, the same things that help any page apply, with one addition: AI Mode runs many related searches across subtopics, so pages that clearly answer the follow-up questions around a topic have more chances to be cited. Google does not guarantee inclusion, and nobody else can either.
What does Google say you need to appear in AI Overviews?
Google's documentation for site owners, “AI features and your website”, is short and plain. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations necessary, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee the page will be shown.
The best practices it lists are the ordinary ones:
- Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting infrastructure.
- Make content easy to find through internal links.
- Provide a good page experience.
- Keep important content in text form, supported by good images and video where they help.
- Keep structured data consistent with the visible text.
- Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.
- Verify the site in Search Console and follow the SEO fundamentals with helpful, people-first content.
How does AI Mode choose pages? (query fan-out)
Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build the response. While the answer is being generated, more supporting pages are found, so a wider set of links can appear than in a classic results page. Google described the same technique when it launched AI Mode, as breaking a question into subtopics and issuing many queries at once.
Google also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the links they show can differ, and that AI Overviews only appear when they add something beyond the classic results.
The practical consequence: a question such as “which ERP integration partner should a manufacturer use” may fan out into searches about costs, timelines, systems and risks. A site that answers each of those on a clear page has more ways in than a site with one general services page.
How do you control what Google's AI features show?
- Googlebot's robots.txt rules control crawling for Search, and so for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Block Googlebot and you are out of both.
- nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google can show from your pages, including in AI features. A stray nosnippet in a template quietly removes a page from being quoted.
- Google-Extended is a separate control for Gemini training and grounding in other Google products. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
- If a control seems not to work, use URL Inspection in Search Console to check Googlebot sees it, then allow time for recrawling; Google says this can take days to months.
How do you measure AI Overview and AI Mode traffic?
Google's documentation says sites appearing in AI features are included in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type, together with ordinary results. GA4 counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search, and its newer AI Assistant channel deliberately excludes them. So neither tool gives you a separate AI Overviews number.
Google states that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, and suggests tracking conversions and time on site in tools such as Google Analytics. That is Google's own claim, so check it against your own data. To know whether you are named, track a fixed set of buyer questions in AI Overviews and AI Mode over repeated runs, and watch conversions from organic search alongside them.
What do independent studies add? (third-party correlations)
The studies below come from SEO software and agency firms using their own data and methods. They show correlations, not Google's rules, and they disagree with one another, which is itself a warning against treating any one figure as fixed.
- Ahrefs (March 2026) analysed 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs. 37.9% of cited URLs also ranked in the top 10 for the same query, 31.2% ranked 11 to 100, and 31.0% ranked beyond 100. Its July 2025 study had put the top-10 share at about 76%. Ahrefs suggests AI Overviews now draw more on fan-out searches than on the original results, and notes its own parsing also improved, so the two figures are not directly comparable.
- BrightEdge (September 2025) tracked AI Overview citations across nine industries from May 2024 to September 2025, and found the share of cited pages that also ranked organically rose from 32.3% to 54.5%.
- Seer Interactive (November 2025) studied 3,119 informational queries across 42 organisations. From June 2024 to September 2025, organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, against a fall from 2.72% to 1.62% on queries without one. Brands cited in the AI Overview had about 35% higher organic click-through and 91% higher paid click-through than brands not cited. Seer says it cannot prove that being cited causes the higher rates; stronger brands may simply be cited more.
What should you do, in order?
- Check eligibility first: the pages you care about are indexed, return 200, are not blocked by robots.txt or a CDN rule, and carry no nosnippet or max-snippet limits you did not intend. URL Inspection confirms all of this.
- Give each service, industry and buyer question its own page, opening with a direct answer in plain text.
- Cover the follow-up questions around each topic (costs, timelines, comparisons, risks), since fan-out searches look for them.
- Keep doing ordinary SEO. Ranking still correlates with being cited, even if the studies disagree on how strongly.
- Keep your Business Profile current and earn mentions on the reviews, lists and publications that appear for your questions.
- Track a fixed question set in AI Overviews and AI Mode and report how often you are named, next to organic leads.
How Seamwire approaches it
We begin with a free AI visibility check: ten real buyer questions, including in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, showing who is named today and whether Google can read and quote your pages. If there is a gap worth closing, an audit maps the questions and their fan-out topics, and a programme builds the pages and tracks the results monthly.
