Perplexity SEO: how to get cited by Perplexity
By the Seamwire team · Updated
THE SHORT ANSWER
Perplexity answers by searching the web as you ask: it pulls passages from its own index, built by its crawler PerplexityBot, and from pages it fetches live, then cites every source it used. To get cited, let PerplexityBot in, put a clear, current answer near the top of the pages that match your buyers' questions, and earn mentions on the places it already cites, such as Reddit, YouTube and review sites. Then check the citations themselves and your referrals from perplexity.ai, because nobody can guarantee a placement.
How does Perplexity find and choose its sources?
Perplexity describes its answers as sourced from the web in real time, as the question is asked. Two agents do the reading. PerplexityBot crawls the web so that sites can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity's results, and it follows robots.txt. Perplexity-User visits a page when a person's question needs it, and Perplexity's documentation says it generally ignores robots.txt, because a user asked for the fetch. Neither is used to train AI foundation models, according to the same documentation.
Behind them sits Perplexity's own search index. When it opened that index to developers in September 2025, Perplexity said it covered hundreds of billions of webpages, processed tens of thousands of index updates every second, and was the same infrastructure that powers its answer engine. It also said documents are split into fine-grained units that are scored against the query one by one.
That last point matters for how you write. Perplexity ranks passages, not just pages, so one clear paragraph that answers a question can be picked up even when the page around it covers more ground.
Why do Perplexity's citations make it easier to work on?
Every Perplexity answer comes with citations that link to the sources it used, shown inline as numbered markers. That makes it the easiest AI engine to audit: you can see exactly which pages it relied on for a question, whether yours is among them, and who is cited in your place.
Treat a single answer with caution, though. AI answers change from run to run: a SparkToro and Gumshoe study of ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice for the same prompt. Perplexity was not part of that study, but the lesson carries over. Run each question several times and record how often you are cited, not whether you were cited once.
What does Perplexity tend to cite?
Ahrefs tracks the domains Perplexity cites across more than 3.1 million US queries on all topics. In its September 2026 snapshot, Reddit took 21.6% and YouTube 20.8% of the citations among the 50 most-cited domains, with Wikipedia third at 6.3%. Consumer review sites such as Yelp and Trustpilot also made the top 50; B2B directories such as G2 and Clutch did not, which says more about the mix of everyday queries than about your market. Ahrefs refreshes the list monthly, so treat the exact figures as a snapshot.
Perplexity also leans towards newer pages. In Ahrefs' study of about 17 million cited URLs, the pages Perplexity cited in its answers were, on average, about 250 days newer than the pages ranking in Google's organic results, and its in-text references tended to run from newest to oldest. That is a correlation, not proof that a fresh date alone wins a citation, but it is a good reason to keep important pages current.
The 2023 research paper that coined “generative engine optimization” tested its methods on Perplexity.ai. Adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page's visibility in answers; keyword stuffing did worse than leaving the page alone.
How do you get cited by Perplexity?
- Let PerplexityBot in. Check robots.txt (a plain “User-agent: PerplexityBot” with “Allow: /” is enough) and your firewall or CDN bot settings, which can block AI crawlers without anyone noticing. Perplexity publishes its crawler IP ranges and recommends matching both the user agent and the IP in firewall rules.
- Serve your main copy in the HTML. A crawler that does not run JavaScript sees an empty page if your text only appears after scripts load.
- Answer first. Give each buyer question a page or a clearly headed section, and state the answer in the opening lines before the detail. Use the question as the heading.
- Add what can be quoted: specific figures with named sources, short definitions, comparisons and steps. Skip keyword repetition.
- Keep pages current. Update facts when they change, show the date, and revisit your most important pages on a schedule.
- Be present where Perplexity already looks: a useful YouTube video that answers a common buyer question, honest participation in relevant Reddit threads under each community's rules, and complete review profiles with real reviews from real clients.
- Do not plant posts, write fake reviews or hide instructions for AI on your pages. They risk your reputation for little gain.
How do you track Perplexity visibility?
- Citation share: a fixed list of 20 to 50 real buyer questions, asked on Perplexity several times each, every month. Record whether you are cited, which URL is cited, and who else appears.
- Referrals: in Google Analytics 4, look for sessions with the source perplexity.ai. GA4's default AI Assistant channel names ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok, but not Perplexity, so check which channel your perplexity.ai visits fall into and add a custom channel group if they are buried in Referral.
- A floor, not a total: some clicks from apps arrive without a referrer and are counted as direct traffic, so referral numbers understate real visits.
- Server logs: requests from Perplexity-User show which pages Perplexity fetched live to answer someone's question, often before any click arrives.
- Leads: tag AI-referred enquiries in your CRM, so you can report what Perplexity brought in, not only how often it named you.
How Seamwire approaches it
We start with a free AI visibility check: ten real buyer questions put to four AI engines, showing who gets cited instead of you and whether AI crawlers can read your site. If there is a gap worth closing, an audit maps the sites Perplexity cites in your market, and a programme fixes the technical side, builds the pages and earns the mentions, with citation share and AI-referred leads reported every month.
